Even beyond the fifth century, this kind of fluidity continues. Of the many examples of this fluidity the Trullan Synod (691–692) is perhaps the most instructive example.40 This was a council of Eastern bishops who met in the domed room (trullus) of the Emperor Justinian’s palace in Constantinople.
